This paper gives a very general and rough survey of the hardware, the system software, and the applications software of the SUPRENUM system. Most supercom puter applications today are based on grid data struc tures. Grid applications also play an essential role in the SUPRENUM development. We therefore place some emphasis on this grid orientation in our presentation. The performance of the SUPRENUM system for grid applications has been evaluated extensively. Some re sults for two model problems are given. The SUPRENUM idea, the project, and the system have gen erally been described and presented in several papers. There are also many more detailed technical papers de scribing SUPRENUM as a whole or certain elements of it. This paper can be regarded as a concise summary of two previous papers (Solchenbach and Trottenberg, 1988; Mierendorff and Trottenberg, 1988).
