DEPARTMENT OF ANATOMY INDIANA UNIVERSITY INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA 46202 The use of computational methods in the study of bone mechanics is described, with emphasis on the finite element method. In addition to the use of stan dard finite element methods for calcuiation of the dis placement, stress-and-strain environment in refined models of bone, the use of a "remodeling finite ele ment" is described to simulate the time course of changes in bone architecture that are induced by me chanical loading. The algorithm, which involves re peated finite element analyses over time, is shown to be feasible for use on supercomputing platforms.
